Named for Josephine (Kelley) Stoddard, Ryan’s great-great grandmother, this represents the earliest foundation of the family’s roots in Colorado. Her husband, Virgil W. Stoddard, arrived in Greeley in 1874, and they were married in 1881, marking the beginning of a story that would take shape in both Greeley and Loveland. It speaks to origin, family, and the early formation of a legacy, with a tone that is warm, grounded, and approachable.
Derived from the initials of Evelyn Susan Stoddard (E.S.S.), Essex represents the continuation of a family story carried forward into a new generation. While rooted in the legacy and values that shaped those who came before, it also reflects growth, evolution, and the enduring connections that span generations. It speaks to continuity and progress, honoring the past while embracing the future with a character that is timeless, thoughtful, and enduring.
Inspired by the idea of a “sterling reputation,” this name reflects a consistent standard of quality, reliability, and trust. It draws from the reputation of both the Foote & Stoddard Livery and the Stoddard Grocery, established by George Stoddard and Florence E. (Dean) Stoddard, Ryan’s great grandparents, in the 1920’s and continuing into the 1940s. Two successive generations of business rooted in the same location (4th and Cleveland), capturing the spirit of early Colorado, and the integrity associated with the family’s work, both then and now.
Inspired by Weston, Ryan and Lauren’s son, and the continuation of the Woodland name into the future, Westwood represents stewardship, growth, and the responsibility of carrying a legacy forward. It reflects a commitment to preserving what has been thoughtfully built while creating space for future generations to shape their own story. The name evokes a sense of permanence, optimism, and purpose, with a character that is grounded, aspirational, and enduring.
